History of The Mission
The roots of the Wheat Street Baptist Church Mission dates back to the Pastorate of the late Rev., Dr. William Holmes Borders, Sr. of which it’s primary focus was service to the Auburn Avenue Community. The success of the mission served as a model and launching pad for “The Hosea Williams Feed the Hungry Program“. The Mission included The Hosea Feed the Hungry Program, a Women’s Shelter (upstairs) and a Men’s Shelter (downstairs) in the Christian Education Building.
The Action Mission Ministry was established by our former Pastor, Dr. Micheal N. Harris, in the early 1990s and later incorporated in 2003.The Mission operates a food pantry, clothing closet, hot meals, USDA and SNAP Food Programs. It also conducts Bible Study classes and provides volunteer opportunities. The staff are all volunteers, including a certified grant writer. The Mission, which is financed by the church congregation, partners, patrons and friends of the Mission, has been an approved 501(c)(3) organization since 2004 and therefore, all donations are tax deductible.
As followers of Christ, the Mission’s purpose is to serve the needy and make disciples of ALL PEOPLE. The Mission further endeavors to provide training in Christian knowledge and service, and to love to all; In keeping with “The Great Commission”, the Mission must be effective in Evangelism and hold firm that the Mission is for Christ and uphold God’s objectives for this institution. Jesus remained focused and overcame this world. As a body of believers the Mission must likewise remain focused because “We Are About Our Father’s Business”.
